OUR STORY
Museum History:
The Brevard Museum, Inc. (BMI) was formed in 1969 and was the original operators of the Brevard Museum of History and Natural Science (Museum), located at 2201 Michigan Avenue in Cocoa, Florida in the middle of the College Green Estates housing subdivision. BMI operated the Museum for over approximately 45 years until mid 2014. During those years, the Museum granted all citizens of Brevard County a look at our history and our progress through wonderful displays and exhibits. In mid 2014, BMI transferred the operations and assets to another local historical non-profit organization that terminated their agreement with the City of Cocoa effective March 1, 2021. Since this time, the City of Cocoa has agreed to continue operations and financial support thru September 30, 2021 and has continued thru the negotiation period.
Current Day:
In late March 2021, the citizens were briefed on the Museum's situation. After many community meetings, speaking to City of Cocoa's Council and a few meetings with City leaders and staff, a plan was forged to take over the Museum's operations. The Brevard Museum and Sciences Center, Inc. (BMSC) was formed as a non-profit in the State of Florida on June 10, 2021 with the intention of obtaining its 501(c)(3) status and enter into a partnership agreement with the City of Cocoa, Florida in later 2021. In August, 2021, BMSC received its determination letter approving its 501(c)(3) status.
The BMSC is a grass roots movement initiated by a few residents of the City of Cocoa, Florida, but has now reached outside the City. Many citizens have offered to volunteer and many businesses have offered financial support.
The BMSC primary purpose is to operate the Museum; to expand the exhibits that educate citizens of all ages of the importance of our history and how it relates to our future. The ancillary benefit that enhances the Museum's purpose is that it is situated on a piece of land that is the home of many Florida Gopher Tortoises. So when you visit the Museum, you are able to experience the best of both worlds, the exhibits in the Museum and the outdoor experience of The Trails.
Until BMSC is able to enter into the operating agreement with the City of Cocoa, Florida, we continue to be a principal supporter of the Museum. Behind the scenes we are organizing, forming committees, planning improvements to the visitors experience, having clean up dates for the property and The Trails, volunteering our time and resources, planning fundraising activities, etc. We do all of this in preparation and hopes of that operating agreement will become a reality in early 2022.
